A place of remembering

The new Garden of Remembrance was opened at the Croud Meadow in summer 2016. Since it opened we’ve buried the ashes of a number of supporters, as well as remembered friends of the club in memorial plaques displayed inside the garden. We’re glad to see it being used as a place for people to sit quietly and gather their thoughts, both on matchdays and at other times of the week.

Burying Ashes

We recognise the place that the football club holds in the hearts of many supporters, and the desire for some people for their ashes to be buried in the garden.

Short services can be arranged by contacting the Shrewsbury Town FC Club Chaplain, Revd Phil Cansdale on 01743 362399 or chaplain@shrewsburytown.co.uk. The service can be conducted by him as club chaplain, or by arrangement with someone else if preferred. The service normally lasts between five and ten minutes, during which time the ashes of the deceased are scattered into a hole dug into the turf of the garden. There will be a simple personalised order of service which can be retained as a special memory marking the occasion.

There is no charge for holding a service, but individuals or families are asked to make a voluntary donation to “Shrewsbury Town Foundation”, supporting the club’s work locally to encourage participation, education, health and social inclusion.

The names of the deceased and the specific ‘site’ of the burial of ashes will be recorded and kept by the club. However, we politely request that no permanent memorials are installed in the garden without permission. Flowers, cards, scarves and other mementos left will be moved after two weeks so that the area can be enjoyed by all in the club community.

Memorial Plaques

For those burying ashes - as well as in memory of supporters buried elsewhere but to be remembered in the garden - it is also possible to purchase a plaque inscribed with a name and brief personal tribute. At a current cost of £30, these are installed along the fence inside the garden. The names of all those remembered in the garden will be also read out each year on a matchday as we also remember other fans who have died.

The plaques are 70mm x 150mm, and come in a couple of standard designs and colours.
